TANNING BOOTHS AND SUNBEDS
they rely on UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin than the UVB rays. These rays do not always cause you to burn, but will damage the elastic content of your skin.
SUN CREAMS
they may protect you against sunburn, but not against skin cancer. These creams encourage people to stay long in the sun, therefore increasing the risk of skin diseases, including melanoma, a serious skin cancer.
Most sun creams work fairly well when applied on thick and at least half an hour before exposure to the sun. Some sun creams achieve their high SPF (Sun Protecting Factor) through a mixture of synthetic chemicals. The high SPF increases the toxic levels of these chemicals.
Examples of some of these chemicals:
Benzophenone 3 – a suspected endocrine disruptor.
Octyl methoxycinnamate –another suspected endocrine disruptor, which when exposed to the sun, becomes more toxic.
Octyl-dimethyl-PABA – mimics oestrogen (in laboratory tests), i.e., encourages cancer cell growth.
NB No sunscreen cream gives you full protection against ultraviolet rays. In fact some creams are known to increase the risk.
-Apply a sunscreen cream before you put on your make-up. This, however, does not guarantee you to stay for hours in the sun. By all means avoid the sun between 10.00 and 15.00 when the sun is at its fiercest.
-Keep your sun exposure to a minimum and prevent premature skin ageing and pigmentations.
-Always wear protective clothing such as a hat, or carry an umbrella and wear sunglasses.
-Avoid ultraviolet rays treatments if you have a family history of skin cancer.
Some recent statistics show more than 70% of people want sun beds banned.
More than 70% think that labelling on sunscreen creams is confusing.
More than 90% say that fashion is influencing tanning and sunbathing.
